As an SLP I couldn’t agree more! I will continue to reach out to my organization, ASHA to encourage them to speak out and take a stand. Wearing a mask while providing speech therapy is clearly not effective!
Thanks so much for your advocacy! Would you like to share your advocacy work with ASHA on this Substack and perhaps suggest some actions other Speech Therapists could take?
Thank you for speaking to this. I have a difficult time getting my five year to mask at doctors visits. Luckily the majority of the time he's seen doctors have been well visits so it begs to question why are we causing anxiety in children trying to make them mask. My five year point blank says I'm not sick I don't have to wear one, well he's not wrong. It has become normalized for parents to send their children to school still sick as long as they wear a mask. (this is where proper use and the far reaching protection that ppl think they provide). Also as RN who sees patients I have a difficult time connecting with patients who aren't allowed to see my face or the ones who cannot hear me. I have had to be in a room with a patient and their doctor to ensure that the doctor was loud enough and clear enough for my HOH patient. We should have never normalized wearing the same mask for hours from room to room. It should be taken off like other PPE at the door. I've also seen continued masking outdoors and also parents making their children also even when participating in sports. I feel like these ppl are forever maskers. I could go on but I am hoping we can finally break free.
Couldn't agree more with you. Thank you for pointing out the obvious- that masks impede connections and give a false sense of security. We must continue our work to restore normal- we are not there yet!

Possibly! I will keep you posted on their response. In the past, they defaulted to the CDC recommendations...
