Kudos to Dr Porter for shining a light on this important topic. I read “ Why Johnny Can’t Read “ in the 70’s when I first started teaching school. Science proved even then that it was the most effective strategy for teaching reading. The new MRI studies of reader’s brains and how they literally form neural connections from phonics instructions proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that phonics works and whole language does not. The fact that the education establishment willfully ignored the science for decades is one of the crimes of the century. School systems across the nation wasted millions of taxpayer dollars on ineffective whole language programs and now we have millions of children who can’t read through no fault of their own.
