Two years ago, I was deeply immersed in medicine, serving as the Medical Director of a pediatric procedural sedation service and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at a renowned university hospital.
I was sure this would be my path until retirement, and I openly expressed my passion for my career on social media.
Yet, today, I find myself not in the clinical setting but as the editor of this Substack. It's a surprising and exciting twist. This transition has allowed me to bring a unique perspective to the table, rooted in my experiences and fueled by my desire to make a positive impact.
My path has been long and winding, but its essence is simple: I've realized that a white coat is not a prerequisite for healing and advocating for children, patients, parents, and our communities.
My vision is to play a part in healing our nation. This vision is not a lofty dream but a tangible goal that starts with empowering you to take charge of your health. I am committed to equipping you with the knowledge and tools to manage your health and medical care.
I firmly believe that healthy individuals form the foundation of healthy families, building a healthy nation.
My journey with Restore Childhood began by collaborating with the physician and scientist wing, Urgency of Normal. Our work commenced during the COVID-19 pandemic when parents like me found it necessary to advocate for a data-driven, child-centered approach to pandemic policy.
Like the founders, I was deeply dismayed by how our public officials and medical institutions prioritized political goals over the well-being of children. Even as a pediatrician, I, a mother of two teenage daughters, felt helpless watching the negative impact these policies had on their psyche, peer relationships, physical fitness, and learning. This fueled my determination to be part of the solution.
While the pandemic may be over, the repercussions of those misguided policies persist and will continue for years. Our responsibility as adults and parents is to establish an ethical framework in science, healthcare, education, and politics that safeguards childhood and prevents repeated and further harm.
As the new editor of the Restore Childhood substack, I take on this responsibility by using written and digital content to inform and educate you on matters important to your family.
You will also see interviews with advocates solving problems in communities nationwide and a weekly review of relevant topics. I hope you will engage with comments and questions on each post.
I also welcome your letters and questions for an expert to address in the new Ask Dr. Nikki column, which is coming soon!
