Eli Steele was filming his dad Shelby for WHITE GUILT, & in the 10 minutes they were gone over $40K of cameras were stolen
We've launched a GoFundMe for the filmmakers
Our friends Eli and Shelby Steele need your help. On Wednesday, while filming their documentary adaption of Shelby’s book WHITE GUILT on San Francisco’s Lombard Street, one of the most iconic streets in the world, their rental SUV was broken into and over $40,000 of camera equipment was stolen. An inventory of what they, and fellow Oakland-based filmmaker Terrell Allen, lost can be found in the GoFundMe campaign we launched for them on Wednesday evening.

You may be familiar with the Steeles’ impressive past work including What Killed Michael Brown? and How Jack Became Black- if you haven’t watched these films, you’re in for an amazing—and very timely—ride exploring identity politics in America.
As you may already know, Eli has been a mentor to Restore Childhood and has supported our work and helped us, fledgling documentary filmmakers, throughout the process. He is also the associate producer for our upcoming documentary 15 Days, about the impact of Covid restrictions on America’s children (film teaser below).
If you are able to support Eli, Shelby and Terrell by donating to the fundraiser, we would be deeply appreciative. The Steeles were reluctant and very humble about launching this fundraiser, but we are glad they accepted the offer of support and already, over 120 individuals have already made contributions. Please share this fundraiser, even if you are unable to donate, so we can get them back to their filmmaking and get this important work out before the 2024 election.
Thanks!
