Dr. Nikki's Weekly Wrap-up
Biological sex matters in England, trends in public school spending, a shopping mall becomes a high school, exercise in children may prevent teen mental illness
TGIF & welcome to Dr. Nikki’s Weekly Wrap-Up, where I highlight stories related to parenting and protecting childhood.
NHS to affirm that biological sex matters
On April 30th, England’s health system announced moves to reverse policies that appease trans rights activists but ignore biological sex. The Health Secretary announced changes to hospital policy that will ensure privacy protections for patients based on biological sex, including restricting transwomen from floors designated for biological women and banning the use of gender-non-specific phrases like “person with ovaries.”
Public education performance unrelated to funding
The Reason Foundation released a report on public education trends. Public school funding increased in nearly every U.S. state with no relationship to student outcomes.
Innovative Texas high school teaches entrepreneurship
Opportunity Central is the name of a school in Forney, TX, that partners with businesses to train students to become entrepreneurs. Students take high school classes on the second floor of a shopping mall and work and learn business skills from store owners on the first floor.
Physical fitness at age 10 may prevent depression in teens
Taiwanese researchers followed 1.9 million ten and eleven-year-old children for an average of six years to see how exercise and fitness correlated with the incidence of anxiety and depression when they became adolescents. They found that ten and eleven-year-olds with higher cardiovascular, respiratory, and muscle endurance had a lower incidence of anxiety and depression in their teenage years.
